The activities of the program
are divided in two groups of work.
1 st GROUP: Development of a Holistic Strategy for the Preservation,
Restoration and Integration in the life of the modern societies
of Old European Masonry Lighthouses
- Historical, environmental, social, economic and cultural, etc.
background of the lighthouse and the surrounding area.
- Measurements, photos, record of damages and laboratory analysis
for the old materials.
- Recognition of the “values” of the old lighthouses
- Laboratory tests on repair techniques and materials (short-term
and long-term tests).
- Description of restoration problems. Proposals of materials
and techniques.
- Proposals for the revival of the lighthouses and the around
area taking into account the historical and natural background
of the area in cooperation with local authorities or other interested
sectors.
- Integration of the restoration and rehabilitation proposals
prepared for each case study into a more general strategy to be
followed in the cases of old lighthouses by the local authorities
for a successful rehabilitation work and integration of the lighthouse
in the modern life as maritime cultural heritage pole of attraction.
- Development of the Holistic Strategy into user friendly, easy
in navigation and interactive where needed multimedia CD-ROM for
increased usability.
2 nd GROUP: Raising awareness and interest, enhancing preservation
and exploitation activities and increase public access
- Short-term seminars to the executives of authorities responsible
for preser vation and use of lighthouses - case studies, on their
value as maritime heritage, the need for their preservation and
protection, the benefits and exploitation possibilities and the
necessity of a holistic approach in their management (presentation
of developed strategy)
- Educational visits on the site (where access is possible) and
volunteer work for young students or professionals / craftsmen.
- Study for the organization of movable exhibition inside European
lighthouses concerning several possible themes (European navigation
history, lighthouses and legends, etc.)
- Organization of 1 movable (probably photographic) exhibition
in one of the case study lighthouses with the cooperation of authorities
owing the lighthouse.
- Organization of symposium involving experts in restoration
and relevant stakeholders from all over Europe. Presentation of
developed strategy for evaluation and raising of awareness reasons.
- Special edition devoted to lighthouses of particular interest
(available for sale during exhibition, symposium and seminars)
The long term benefits of such a work are multiple.
- Code for the recognition of the value of Old Masonry Lighthouses
as Maritime Cultural Heritage and their treatment by the managing
authorities likewise
- Successful and lasting interventions. With a guide anticipating
most of the accessibility and restoration problems, intervention
work becomes safer and less time and money consuming on the managing
authorities, increasing in this way the possibility to take up
such an action.
- Enhancement of the reuse of the Old lighthouse either for navigation
or accommodation of maritime museums, exhibitions, workshops,
local offices, etc.
- Integration of the lighthouses in the cultural and everyday
life of the local societies and exploitation for tourism and other
reasons.
- Raising awareness of young people. Any project aiming at preservation
of cultural heritage, as is the case of PHAROS adds value to the
quality of life of the citizens or local people and makes them
(especially youngers) to love and protect their monument by themselves.
This awareness has very important impact on different expressions
of the society.
- Consideration of the European Cultural Heritage as common heritage.
Especially in the frame of the proposed project through the lighthouses
could be made understandable that the Navigation History of Europe
is a common heritage stimulating the restless spirit of the European
people.
