Italy -"Ancient lighthouse" in the "Marine Village" of Cervia - Ravenna

  by Virginia Ravaioli, Project manager “PHAROS”

Cervia lighthouse, Ravenna

The “ancient lighthouse” of Cervia, situated in Nazario Sauro street in the “Marine Village”, point of reference of the navy of the city, was carried out in 1875 in place of that existing at that time, situated in an unfavourable location. In the time the lighthouse has at once various mutations. In particular, it was raised in 1918 because buildings of notable altitude rose around it and it was restored in the second post war period to cure the damages derived from the war conflict. The actual structure’s inclination toward the canal has been caused by the implementation of the restoration works of the quays.
Though the lighthouse is still signalized on the nautical papers, it doesn't develop a function of orientation anymore, since buildings that prevent partially the visibility on the quadrant of S.E. have been raised in his proximities. The ancient lighthouse of Cervia, point of reference of the navy of the city, that has raised a symbolic value as time passed for the same city, it inserts in the interventions aimed to right up the existing cultural heritage. In particular the needs of the seaport canal, that is subject to the substantial impact of the numerous tourist seasonal presences and those of the centre, they require interventions of retraining of a strategic area in the Cervia’s territory. The ancient lighthouse, historical emergency in such context, required an intervention aimed to the salvaging, the consolidation and the conservative improvement. The lighthouse needed an intervention of restructuring, recover and substitution of the deteriorate parts.
By preliminary investigations, different sorts of deterioration were founded as listed below:

  • Scarce presence of damp that climb up again on the fundamental masonry of the inferior part;
  • Stucco work of the existing escapes performed with cement mortar, not reflecting the technical characteristics of the original mortar;
  • Mortar’s lack in some interstices of the masonry;
  • Elements of bricks (fundamental masonry) and mortar with scarce mechanical characteristics;
  • Deterioration of the wooden elements (front door of entry, frames, internal climbs entirely unfit for use);
  • Presence of algae and lichens to be removed;
  • Presence of efflorescence;
  • Lunette overlooking the access’s gate is deteriorated and notched by rust;
  • General state of deterioration of all the metallic parts (skylight, railings);

Compact limestone’s stringcourses like Istria’s stone to polish up and reset. It is necessary to verify in time the verticality of the Lighthouse in order to establish the foundation’s strengthening actions. The execution of the plan for the “Salvage of the Ancient Lighthouse situated in the Marine Village of Cervia” is divided in the under mentioned two parts:

  • The reclamation and restoration of building structures, of frame and technical equipments (for example electric lighting);
  • Flooring works and outdoor arrangement after the execution of the verticality verify.
