Description
Nowadays, there are eight lighthouses corresponding to the main
landfalls of the island : Paphos, Cape Gata, Cape Kiti, Cape Greco,
Cape Akama [Arnaouti], Cape St.Andreas, Kyrenia and Cape Kormakiti.
The last three are located within the turkish occupied area of Cyprus
and are, therefore, outside the effective control of the Cyprus
Ports Authority since 1974. With the exception of Cape Akama, these
lighthouses were constructed in the last quarter of the 19th century,
during British Colonial times and are made of local sandstone.
Paphos lighthouse is situated at Paphos cost near the medieval Castle
and the archaelogical site. This area is also well known as a passage
of Birds and suitable for Bird watching.
The building consists of a main stonebuilt cylinder tower and a
metal cabinet at the top. This cylinder stonebuilt body has variable
diameter sizes, elimanated through heigh, from bottom to top. Four
levels are formed inside the building.
The base of the structure begins with an interior radius of 140
cm and 135 cm wallthickness. The top ends with interior radius of
125 cm. and wallthickness of 65 cm. Groundfloor level is an enclosed
circular room with a single door opening. A stonebuilt staircase,
attached to the building leads to firstfloor. Fist floor has a metal
staircase of 52cm width which leads to second floor. Second floor
has an interior diameter of 264cm.and a second metal staircase leading
to third floor level. Third level has an opening at its roof and
steps lead to fourth level where the lamp is situated.
At the fourth level there is a circular metal balcony along the
3/4of its perimeter . The building at this level has a stonebuilt
decorated projection on which a concrete balcony is situated along
all perimeter. Two narrow windows are formed at each level and pavements
are constructed from metal beams and concrete slab.
The metal cabinet of the lamp has a perimeter narrow balcony of
45 cm. width.
